My new friend Kristyn that I met on the plane told me that people like to see pictures of famous things, but that they want to know the regular everyday stuff too. So here's my blog about food.
I love English food. It's a fact. I had a Cornish Pasty the other day, and a mince pie. A traditional Cornish Pasty, which is the type I had, is basically like stew wrapped in pastry and finished with deliciousness. Today I went for fish and chips (delicious!!!) and Jaffa Cakes. Jaffa Cakes are my new favourite thing. They basically taste like a Terry's Chocolate Orange on a vanilla cookie. Delightful.
Seriously, the food here is amazing.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't eat fancy things all the time. Those are pretty much the only fancy things I've had to eat. I mostly buy things at Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer. My most favourite meal of late is what you see in the picture below. A big cup of soup (actually a decent size!) with two free buns all for 1.60 GBP (about $2.50 CAD). It's been really nice on cold days. Otherwise, I get sandwiches and apples and sandwich fixin's and such for cheap from whatever grocery store I go to.
I'll buy the occasional bottle of water, too, and I want you to guess how much this bottle of water cost me. It's 2L and I got it at Sainsbury's. Go ahead. Guess. I'll tell you later.
Anyway, so that's what I'm eating. Next on my list of delicious British food: pork pies, bangers and mash, and any number of pub foods. Open to suggestions, too!
The local Indian is usually a good bet. No butter chicken buffet, just the real stuff. Sunday roast lunch, with Yorkshire puddings. Pizza Express - get the pizza Fiorentina (no olives). Gosh I miss that pizza.
ReplyDeleteIf you're back in London and miss Canadian food, there is a Canada store (or rather a few shelves at the back of the Australia store). It's besides the Canadian pub near Covent Garden.
Please feel free to have an extra mince pie for me!
Of course you'd be the perfect person to ask! Score. When you come for our Rocket Dog shopping excursion, you can fill up on pizza!
ReplyDeleteI got all my food at grocery stores, too, Sainsbury's and Tesco and the Co-op. Occasionally a non-grocery store treat. But oh, the sandwiches to go at Sainsbury's, yummy!
ReplyDeleteObviously food figures largely in our family. I just blogged on food too.
ReplyDeleteAnd my word verification was tomene (as in Ptomaine?)
ReplyDeleteMmmmm. Fish & chips. The REAL kind. Oooh, and Yorkshire pudding. Now I'm hungry.
ReplyDeleteSo jealous of the gluten-y goodness. I be crying now.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure the Fish and Chips weren't that good.
